The photo part evolves in a subtle way compared to the previous generation, but the difference is significant with warmer colors and better rendering in low light. The iPhone SE 5G , released in 2022, is the third iteration of the line. If it retains a classic iPhone appearance with a 4.7-inch screen and a Touch ID sensor, it does however integrate an Apple Bionic A15 chip, also present on the iPhone 13. All that remains is to buy the iPhone SE 2022, it is the assurance of affording a recent iPhone at a “low” price.
iPhone 13 Pro Max: the ultimate
If you want – and can, because be careful, prices are soaring quickly – to offer you the best, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is there for that. This imposing smartphone is based on a large 6.7-inch screen whose OLED panel is capable of reaching a refresh rate of 120 Hz for optimal fluidity. On the back we find three completely redesigned cameras. The main sensor still displays 12 megapixels, but it has larger photosites to capture as much light as possible. The telephoto lens is now a x3, here the equivalent of a 77mm film, while the ultra-wide-angle benefits from new very bright optics.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max benefits as a bonus from all the brand’s know-how in terms of digital processing to become the new reference in photo and video. Its new generation in-house processor of course gives it all the power it needs. But the most surprising remains the autonomy of this smartphone which is simply excellent, whereas it is generally not the favorite exercise of the iPhone. iPhone 11: it has (almost) not aged
If 5G compatibility isn’t your primary concern or you’re mostly going to uncovered areas, the iPhone 11 might seem like a good choice. Its design is still as successful as ever, especially since Apple still offers it on its site in a wide range of colors. Two capacities are also in the catalog, 64 and 128 GB, with an attack price of 589 € or a hundred euros less than the iPhone 12 Mini.
This is not negligible, especially since the oldest model offers a similar or almost similar experience in terms of general fluidity and photo quality. Its larger screen could end up convincing and it is as always at Apple of excellent quality. The iPhone 11 has Wi-Fi 6, proof that it is far from being technically totally outdated.
iPhone SE 2020: an ultra-compact entry ticket that still has its fans, but for how long?
Even if Apple has long been the standard bearer of resistance to the massive arrival of large smartphones, the Californian brand has ended up following in the footsteps of its competitors.
However, it still offers a serious alternative with its iPhone SE. Seriously brought up to date from a technical point of view in the spring of 2020, the SE constitutes a serious alternative since it embeds the same processor as the iPhone 11 and the same radio part. If it does without 5G, it nevertheless offers Wi-Fi 6.
But what necessarily appeals to fans of the SE is of course its compactness. It has a screen of only 4.7 inches compared to 6.1 inches for the iPhone 13.
However, this argument is losing its meaning today with the arrival of the Minis. Certainly it has a larger screen, 5.4 inches in this case, but thanks to the significantly higher occupancy rate of this one (85.1% against 65.4%), an iPhone 13 or 12 Mini will thus be less high, less wide and barely thicker.
Even the weight is close. The €200 difference between an iPhone SE and an iPhone 12 Mini still weighs a lot in the balance and ultimately this remains almost the only element weighing in favor of the SE.
iPhone 8: almost an SE for much less
The iPhone 8, inducted in 2018, is at first glance quite similar to the iPhone SE 2020: their screen is the same size, it has Touch ID on the front, their battery capacity is identical, as is their camera. The difference is concentrated around design and mechanics. While the processor powering the iPhone 8 is significantly less powerful than that at work in the SE, most users will barely notice the difference in everyday use.
The iPhone SE also has a faster 4G and Wi-Fi chip, but again nothing really essential today. So should we finally fall for an iPhone 8? First pitfall, it has disappeared from the brand’s catalog. It is therefore necessary to turn to the occasion or even better to the reconditioned. To get an idea of the price, we visited a few specialized sites.
On Backmarket, it is possible to find iPhone 8 64 GB in new condition for €300 with a 6-month warranty. At Recommerce, it will cost you around €370, but the warranty is increased to 12 months. And if opting for refurbished, beyond environmental considerations, made it possible to afford a smartphone more richly endowed with storage memory, because, need we remind you, iPhones do not have a microSD slot? Well know that for €370, i.e. still €130 less than the SE 2020, it is possible to acquire an iPhone 8 256 GB in new condition. An alternative to definitely take into account.
iPhone XR: a refurbished Rolls
The iPhone XR, tested here by us , has attracted a lot of sympathy largely for its shimmering colors. Beyond these aesthetic considerations, this is an excellent smartphone with solid autonomy that has not said its last word in 2021. Apple no longer offers it on its site, but it can be found second-hand .
The refurbished allows you to find iPhone XR between 500 and 570 € depending on their condition. It’s still a little high in absolute terms, but if the iPhone SE’s 4.7-inch screen is really too small for you, it can be a nice alternative.
Which iPhone for 5G?
While the Android world has adopted 5G very quickly, Apple has been a bit more cautious. If the first 5G smartphones powered by Google’s OS appeared in February 2020, the first 5G iPhone was the 12 launched in the fall of 2020. A few months late, but it was not really dramatic , because the 5G network was not really there yet.
Today, things have changed and operators are advancing very quickly, including in medium-sized cities. Which iPhones are waterproof?
It was several years after Android smartphones that waterproofing arrived in the small world of iPhones. Not quite, because like its competitor Google, Apple relies heavily on the cloud, which does not prevent it from revising the built-in memory of its smartphones upwards. Thus, the iPhone 13 starts with 128 GB against 64 GB for its predecessor.
In our view, this is the minimum capacity today for everyday use and without having to think about cleaning too often. Of course, you will be even quieter with a higher capacity. But be careful, the bill can then climb very quickly. 256 GB seems like a good compromise. Impossible not to mention here the iPhone 13 Pro and the possibility of choosing it with 1 TB of internal memory! A huge capacity, but which will only be useful for video enthusiasts who will use the ProRes format, a kind of RAW of the video which weighs very heavy: up to 6 GB per minute in 4K!
What about older iPhones?
With Apple’s policy of extending the compatibility of its smartphones with new versions of iOS for a long time, it can be tempting to be tempted by an older model. Be careful, however, if you opt for the classic occasion. Beyond purely cosmetic issues such as scratches, the battery of an old iPhone has inevitably lost its luster, since it is considered a wearing part.
Your iPhone may then have a very reduced autonomy. Going through refurbished is in our view a better alternative. A guarantee is applied and the battery is often new. However, we do not advise you, in 2022 and unless you have a very tight budget, to buy a model older than the iPhone 8, or even the X series.
