A men’s guide to dressing in a business-casual setting

Many companies started adopting a business casual dress code many years ago with the introduction of “Casual Friday”. In the last ten to fifteen years, Casual Friday has become part of everyday life for many companies. If you are in a business-casual environment, you should be careful when choosing workwear. An employee in this environment must remember that their appearance may or may not make the first impression, and every employee will at some point be someone’s “face” of the company. Gentlemen, business casual means much more than khakis and a polo golf shirt. Don’t be afraid to show some personality through your demeanor, just be sure to show some restraint. For example, T – shirts, printed or unprinted, have no place in a professional workplace. Also, do everyone you work with a favor and don’t wear a shoe that exposes your feet. Skip the sandals for the beach and always wear socks to work.

Now that we’ve looked at two rules that should be considered absolutes, let’s look at some of the options the business-casual man has.

The suit

Believe it or not, this is a business casual option. Today’s suits are designed to be more versatile. Many models can be worn without a tie or with a crew-neck or stand-up collar shirt. A sweater can even be added during the colder months.

The main thing is that it’s still a suit. It should only be worn after it has been ironed and cleaned. Also, make sure the pants have a clean and clear crease. You can dress the suit loose, but it still has its place and appeal. The purpose of the elegant down suit is to look more casual and relaxed, but still look sharp and well put together. To keep the suit in good condition, try to have it cleaned no more than four times a year. Too much dry cleaning can damage the fabric.

The sports coat

There are too many options these days to touch individually. The most important thing to remember about a sport coat , much like a suit, is to look for versatility. Many jackets can be worn in a business-casual setting during the day and paired casually with a nice pair of jeans in the evening. Also, make sure it stays in good condition, just like the suit.

There is a difference between a jacket and a blazer. Really, no man should be without a navy blazer in his closet. It’s simply one of those items of clothing that every man could use at some point and, in this man’s opinion, is just as necessary as a pair of jeans or khakis. Stick to wool for your blazer because it just looks and feels better than blended fabrics. The blazer isn’t as casual as many sport jackets , but like the suit, it can be dressed down and keeps that well-put together look.

shirts

I can’t say this enough, but I don’t wear printed or solid t-shirts to work. They’re just not appropriate in a professional setting. The three options here are polo or golf shirts, stand-up collar shirts, or button-down shirts. Stand collar shirts come in a variety of fabrics and look great under suits and sport jackets . Polo shirts also come in a variety of colors and fabrics and are a fairly traditional business casual option.

More and more men are wearing open-necked shirts, usually with a tie. The important thing here is to keep them clean and pressed. Just because the look is less formal doesn’t mean it should be sloppy. There are various collar options, from buttoned to spread to pinpoint. There’s really no rule here, but my suggestion is to try all the styles and choose what you’re most comfortable wearing.

Another reference to buttoned shirts is the French cuff shirt. It has become much more acceptable to wear a tasteful French shirt with a nice set of cufflinks without a tie. MOCK NECK TEE It adds a little touch of a classic look without dressing you up too much. Again, this is one of those personal preferences. My suggestion is to try it. If you don’t like it, don’t wear it.

trousers

Don’t wear jeans to work. Now that we’ve got that covered, what should you wear? Khaki pants are a very traditional option. Make sure the ones you wear to work are clean, have a clear crease and fit properly. Wearing these shoes every day makes you seem… well… boring.

Change things up with charcoal, black or olive. Even gray pants can work with the right shirt and jacket. We come to another personal preference with pleats versus flat front. Try both again and go with comfort.
