How to Set Up Face ID in a Used iPhone 12 Pro

Used iPhone 12 Pro

Ever since Apple removed the fingerprint sensor from the phone, they’ve introduced a new feature called the Face ID to protect your phone. Once Apple started to do it, every other phone brand started to copy it and started integrating it into their security system.

However, if you’re new to the Apple ecosystem like me and just bought yourself a used iPhone 12 Pro, you don’t really know how to set it up. That’s why the Face ID features will be discussed today, as well as how to set them up.

In this article, I’ll be going over the following:

  • What is the Face ID feature in an iPhone
  • How to set up Face ID in a used iPhone 12 Pro

For those who don’t know, let’s start with an explanation of the feature.

What Is the Face ID Feature in an iPhone?

Face ID is a facial recognition technology available on iPhones and many other devices. It replaces the traditional fingerprint-based authentication system, Touch ID, and is designed to quickly and securely unlock an iPhone with just a glance.

In order for Face ID to work, you must use a TrueDepth camera to scan your face. This camera uses an infrared dot projector to map out the unique contours of your face in 3D. For enhanced security, it also captures an image of your face in addition to the infrared image. The data collected from the scan is then processed by Apple’s chip that securely stores it on your device and compares it every time you use Face ID.

As long as there are no significant changes in your appearance (growing facial hair, wearing glasses, etc.), your iPhone will quickly and securely unlock with a glance. However, this isn’t an issue with the latest iOS version for a used iPhone 12 Pro. The advantage of Face ID over Touch ID is that it is completely hands-free and requires no physical contact with the device to be successful.

If for some reason, the lighting condition isn’t suitable or there is something on the camera lens, your face won’t be recognized. However, there’s nothing to worry about because, in addition to facial recognition, you can also set up a passcode for your iPhone. Just enter the digits in, and you will be able to unlock the screen.

Additionally, the Face ID can also be used for Apple Pay purchases, accessing secure apps and websites, and verifying identity for various other services. It’s important to note that Face ID only stores data related to facial recognition on the device and does not send facial scans to Apple’s servers.

Overall, Face ID is a convenient and secure way for you to unlock your iPhone, use Apple Pay, verify your identity for other services, and secure access apps. You’ll be the only one who can access your personal information at all times.

How to Set Up Face ID in a Used iPhone 12 Pro

If you’re buying a used iPhone 12 Pro, the shop owner will provide you with one of two states to verify the condition of the phone. The first one is when you have to set up the device yourself, and the other is when the device has already been set up for you. If you have to set up the device yourself, then you’ll immediately see the Face ID option. Alternatively, you’ll need to follow these steps.

  1. To access the “Settings” section, tap the gear icon on the home screen.
  2. Afterward, select the “Face ID & Passcode” option.
  3. If the shop owner has set up some sort of passcode, then ask him to enter it.
  4. Next, tap on the “Set Up Face ID” option.
  5. Hold the phone in portrait mode in front of your face.
  6. Rotate your head in a circular motion so the iPhone can scan it and save it.
  7. Once it’s done, tap the “Continue” button.
  8. It’ll ask you again to scan your face by rotating it in a circular motion.
  9. Upon completion of the process, tap “Done.”

Now next time when you want to open your phone screen simply look at it. Just make sure there is ample lighting, so the camera has enough images to work with.

Before you buy the used iPhone 12 Pro from the vendor, make sure to change the passcode on the phone. Following these steps will assist you in setting up the passcode.

  • In the same “Face ID & Passcode” section, scroll down a bit and tap on the “Change Passcode” option.
  • First, you’ll need to enter the old passcode that the shop owner set up.
  • Once you enter that, type in the new passcode for your phone.
  • After that, it’ll ask you to verify the passcode that you’ve previously entered.

By following these steps, you will be able to set up your new passcode successfully. During setting the passcode, you do have the option to change what type of or what number of passcodes you want to set up. However, I prefer the default option.

Conclusion

Overall, by following the above-mentioned steps, you can easily set up a Face ID on your used iPhone 12 Pro without any issues. Additionally, make sure that you don’t forget the passcode on your phone because you will need it to unlock your phone once you restart it.
