HAIR TRANSPLANTATION WITH FOLLICULAR UNITS: STRIP HARVEST METHOD

Abstract

The roots of modern hair transplantation first emerged in Japan in the 1930s. In 1939, Japanese dermatologist Dr. Okuda details the procedure of surgical hair restoration for burn victims. Later in 1943, the other Japanese dermatologist popularly known as Dr. Tamura is aware of the work of Dr. Okuda, explaining that each follicular unit consists of more than one trapianto di capelli turchia hair root comprising between 1 and 4 follicular units, and applied the elliptical incision to extract the donor tissue and then dissected each individual graft.

Later, in 1952, a New York dermatologist named Dr. Norman Oreintreich performed the first-ever hair transplant in the United States on a man suffering from male pattern baldness. It was the time to reinvent and redefine the process of hair transplantation. And now it is the best option for a patient suffering from male pattern baldness and similarly applies to female pattern baldness as well.

In FUT, the grafts are harvested via the strip of skin that is usually taken from the back and sides of the scalp, known as the “safe donor zone,” and transferred to the recipient zone to achieve the aesthetic goal of the procedure.

Introduction

The hair transplant procedure finds its origins in 1952 with the revision restoration procedure of Dr. Norman Oreintreich introducing the process of punching for extraction using 4mm punches. The same was later transformed into the procedure of micrografting and minigrafting. And from there, later in 1990, the most compatible technique for harvesting the grafts emerged, involving the strip of skin containing the follicular units. In the FUE hair transplant technique, the extraction involves the use of a punch machine that allows the grafts to be extracted one by one from the scalp and also applied to the unsafe zone to extract the hair roots if necessary. As a deviation in punching that may occur due to the random movement of punching, which is automatically the limit for extracting the roots from the scalp. The aesthetic distance must be maintained in order to remove the transplants. The removal of the graft in FUE hair transplantation leaves a small open hole that heals with a small white spot. In the FUT procedure, an acronym for follicular unit transplantation, follicular units, which usually mate in 1-4 numbers, are moved from the donor part to the recipient part via the excision of the strip of skin. In the FUT procedure, the patient’s scalp is anesthetized to excise the strip and make an incision to remove the strip, and the part is closed by the advanced trichophyte closure to avoid scarring. When executed well, the results of FUT look completely natural and are undetectable.

This article provides an overview of various aspects of FUT such as: B. Prerequisites for performing FUT hair transplant, indications and myths and facts, steps, limitations and budget cost perspective of FUT procedure.

PRINCIPLE OF FOLLUCULAR UNIT TRANSPLANTATION

In the FUT procedure, the strip of skin is removed from the donor area (back and sides of the scalp) and the donor strip is then separated into the individual follicular units using precise stereomicroscopic dissection techniques. After the dissection of the follicular units, the next step is to create the hairline design on the scalp to place the grafts. The scalp incision area is closed by the advanced Trichophytic closure, which avoids the likelihood of scars and makes the procedure scar-free.

The main advantage of FUT hair transplantation is that it is suitable for covering the higher degree of Norwood class balding as the technique delivers the largest number of follicular units over the strip. As the follicular units in FUT hair transplant harvested hair transplant turkey from the safe donor part are inherently permanent as these roots are resistant to the effects of DHT. It is only possible to implant the higher number of follicular units via FUT hair transplantation and no other alternatives are practiced in the field of hair transplantation when higher number of grafts are required to cover the greater degree of baldness.
